Shortly after the Spanish Civil War ended on 1st April 1939 the Francoist regime started to fortify the Gibraltar Area, fearing an Allied invasion of Southern Spain, due to the proximity of Gibraltar. The system of fortifications is known nowadays as the Jevenois Line due to the Spanish General who supervised the plans.
Although defensive in nature, two Spanish plans were drawn up, the Jevenois Plan and Operation C to hypothetically invade Gibraltar, preceding the German Operation Felix. Even today, there are still over 500 WWII bunkers, command posts, air raid shelters, artillery emplacements, search lights, anti-aircraft gun emplacements, roads, bridges and an airfield, which were purposely built between 1940 and 1947 between San Enrique de Guadiaro and Conil de la Frontera.
